Maintaining TeleVantage - A few thoughts and tips

Are you on the most current Televantage you own?  Updates are free.  Each provides problem fixes and features.

  • You can check the version you’re running by opening Viewpoint and going to “help” then “about”.  Your version numbers display.
  • The most current version 8 is 8.10.5647, anything lower should be updated.
  • The most current version 7 is 7.6.4997, anything lower should be updated.
  • Each of these most current versions provides a Televantage Windows 7 client.

How old is your Televantage server?  We see 6 or 7 year old servers running Televantage.  What’s your plan if the server fails?  What would your business cost be if you lost your phones for 1 to 2 days?

  • Are you doing nightly backups? You should be!
  • What’s the date of your last good backup?  We often find people “assume” the backups are working only to find they aren’t.  Check the file dates.
  • Are your backups being stored OFF your Televantage server?  If the server is lost you want to have access to backup files.  Store them on another server or drive in the office (and/or off site).
  • Do you have another server in house you could use as a backup server?  Have a plan for server loss.  Know what you’d do if your primary server fails.  The older the server the higher the risk of failure.
  • Have you checked all drive lights on your server to see they are working/healthy?  If a server has RAID (mirror or RAID 5) it may run with one bad drive but fail completely if a second drive goes bad.  Check to confirm you aren’t running a degraded drive set.
  • Make sure you’re on a UPS.  Hard shutdowns can occasionally corrupt a Televantage database causing an outage.  Better to be safe.  Never just “power off” a Televantage system!

Is your server REALLY old?

  • If your server is over 5 years old it probably has less computing power than your smartphone.  If you plan to keep using your Televantage more current hardware can improve system response times, Viewpoint performance, and allow increased capacity.
  • Would a new primary server be a good investment?
  • In many sites we see two servers and a chassis used for redundancy.  A newer server is the primary, an older server is the backup, and Dialogic cards are kept in a chassis so they can be moved from one server to another with a single cable.
